How to do Screen Recording on Mac Using Commands(Full/Partial Screen Recording)

The screen recording feature on the Mac computer is an advanced creativity that allows users to carry out different functions. You could either record tutorials or capture step by step procedures. Many instructors use this particular feature to make the learning process as interactive as possible.

The crucial question we need to answer here is, how to screen record on Mac to share or even watch later.

The basic idea of screen recording is the same in all Mac OS. However, you can choose to either record the entire screen or record a portion/section of the screen.

Step-by-step process

Recording the entire screen on Mac

  1. To record the entire screen, open the screen recording menu by clicking the Command key + Shift + number 5 simultaneously. You should start by pressing the command key then the shift key immediately after that, then number 5. (This process should not take more than 1 second to execute)
  2. A few controls will appear at the bottom of the screen. (See image below)
  • By clicking theentire screen recording step 3 button on the onscreen controls, you will be recording the entire screen.
  • The pointer will change to a camera icon.
  • You can choose to either click the screen or click the “Record” button in the controls to start recording.
  • Click the entire screen recording step 6 button on the menu bar to stop recording. Alternatively, you can press the Command key + Control key + Escape (ESC) key to stop recording.
  • The video thumbnail automatically appears at the bottom right corner on your screen.
  • You can click on the thumbnail to share, save, trim, or even perform other functions.

Recording only a section of the screen

Here, you will need to repeat only a few steps similar to recording the entire screen.

  1. Click the Command key + Shift + number 5 simultaneously.
  2. An onscreen control command will appear that is similar to the image below.

  • Now, Click the screen recording step 3 control button.
  • A window will appear and prompt you to choose the size you want to record
  • Move the window to the part you want to record. You can click and drag the corner of the window to fit the size you want – if the window does not precisely fit your screen.
  • Next, click the screen or click the “Record” button in the controls to start recording.
  • Click the entire screen recording step 6 button on the menu bar to stop recording.Instead, you can press the Command key + Control key + Escape (ESC) key to stop recording.

Note that Mac OS records sound automatically by default. But, you can choose to adjust the settings to fit your preferences by clicking the “option” button and follow the steps.

The Options menu also has got other functions like timer settings, save to folder, remember last selection, and show floating thumbnails.
